Solana Raised Block Capacity to 100 Million Compute Units. Per-Account Limits Did Not Change

    Published September 17, 2026

Solana raised the maximum work in one block from 60 million to 100 million compute units on July 29, 2026. The per-account write cap stayed at 12 million.

Solana raised the maximum work that can fit in one block from 60 million to 100 million compute units on July 29, 2026. The limit on how much work can write to a single account stayed at 12 million.

Compute units measure the work a transaction performs. The block limit caps how much work a leader can pack into a single block. The Solana Foundation 100M CU blocks page records this as a 66% increase in the per-block compute cap. The writable-account compute cap did not change.

The Foundation page uses a share-of-block example: a single hot account that consumed 20% of a 60 million CU block would consume 12% of a 100 million CU block. The page calls that extra room parallel capacity.

    Who, what, when, and where

The Solana Foundation lists this as a live mainnet upgrade. Jito Labs authored SIMD-0286. Validators activated it on mainnet at the start of epoch 1009 on July 29, 2026.

The feature gate address is P1BCUMpAC7V2GRBRiJCNUgpMyWZhoqt3LKo712ePqsz. The Foundation page says the change is not breaking and that no indexing updates are required. The upgrades index lists it as live on mainnet under Agave 4.1, shipped May 2026.

    Confirmed evidence

The Foundation page states that blocks now have a 100 million compute unit maximum, that max writable-account compute units stay at 12 million, and that the max block accounts data size delta remains 100MB. It labels the upgrade live on mainnet and dates it to July 2026.

From the 60 million CU activation on July 22, 2025, to the 100 million CU increase, the Foundation page says 11.2% of blocks used 56 million CUs or more. That figure is a Foundation claim, not an independent count.

The same page says that, after this increase, mainnet traffic does not face block execution constraints, that the network keeps 400ms block times, and that XDP kernel-bypass networking is a key enabler, with more than 70% of mainnet stake running it. Those timing and stake figures are claims on the Foundation page. They are not independently verified here. A separate CryptoWorkPro report covers the later reduced slot-time work, so the 400ms figure should not be read as the current slot time.

The Foundation page notes that bigger blocks take longer to execute, which can slow replay and catchup. It says RPC providers, indexers, and exchanges should test 100 million CU blocks. Agave 4.0.0 and later support XDP. Firedancer defaults to it. The page says Agave 4.2 will too.

    Context and timeline

Solana moved from 50 million to 60 million CUs through SIMD-0256. That went live in July 2025.

The Foundation page says teams tested 100 million CUs first on testnet at epoch 983, then on devnet at epoch 1100. An 80 million CU intermediate step was considered and rejected in favor of the 100 million CU change. The page cites XDP and reduced slot times as related but separate upgrades.

    What remains unknown

    • How often blocks now fill toward 100 million CUs.
    • Independent confirmation of the 11.2% near-full blocks figure beyond the Foundation page.
    • Whether later block-limit increases are planned.
    • Operational results at individual RPC, indexer, and exchange shops.

    What to watch next

Check the live status on the 100M CU blocks page.

Treat slot-time and Alpenglow pages as separate upgrades. They cover different changes.

Watch whether Solana publishes later capacity figures after the 100 million CU change.
