Solana Alpenglow Not Live on Mainnet: Agave 4.3 and SIMD-0326 Timeline Explained
Alpenglow is Solana's planned next consensus protocol. Official pages still list it as in development, not live on mainnet.
Alpenglow is Solana's planned next consensus protocol. Official upgrade pages still list it as in development, not active on mainnet.
Who, what, when, and where
The Solana Foundation describes Alpenglow as the planned replacement for Solana's current consensus system, beginning with Votor. Official pages say the consensus switch is not live. Activation is listed separately from the Agave 4.2 client that already carries testable Alpenglow code.
Agave 4.3 sits as the next major client update. Pages list it as Planned for October 2026. Alpenglow shows as In Development on the upgrades index. The network runs on mainnet. No Alpenglow activation has occurred there yet.
Confirmed evidence
The Solana upgrades index marks Agave 4.3 as Planned, Expected October 2026. It lists Solana Alpenglow as In Development. The description reads: "Faster finality with Solana's next consensus protocol," with a 150ms target finality and 20+20 adversarial plus offline stake model.
The dedicated Alpenglow page carries an In Development label. June 2026 appears from Solana Foundation. A table on that page states Expected Mainnet Activation Date Q3 2026. Devnet Activation ties to Agave 4.3. It notes Breaking Change Yes and Indexing Changes Required Yes.
Agave 4.2 overview, dated August 2026, states Agave 4.2 includes Alpenglow code. Developers and validators test it in a community test cluster. "Alpenglow will not be activated on mainnet in Agave 4.2." Activation points to Agave 4.3, targeted for October 2026.
- BLS pubkey (SIMD-0387) activated mainnet July 8, 2026.
- VAT (SIMD-0357) activated mainnet July 22, 2026.
Validators without a registered BLS pubkey face exclusion from the VAT admitted set. This admission gating enforces through the VAT feature gate. It does not turn on Solana Alpenglow consensus itself. That activates separately in Agave 4.3.
Context and timeline
Solana replaces its consensus protocol with Alpenglow, beginning with Votor. The target is roughly 150ms finality. Current Solana offers roughly 400ms pre-confirmation latency and 12.8-second TowerBFT finality.
Votor handles 20% adversarial stake plus 20% offline stake. TowerBFT needs greater than two-thirds of stake for confirmed status. Alpenglow drops vote transactions. Votes go directly between validators.
Fast path: a block finalizes after one round if at least 80% of stake votes to notarize. If not, a second round uses 60% stake thresholds.
A later phase replaces Turbine with Rotor. Rotor does not join the first activation.

Official pages conflict on timing. The Alpenglow page says Q3 2026. Agave 4.2 overview says October 2026. BLS/VAT page says Q4 2026 for SIMD-0326, once Agave 4.3 hits mainnet.
What remains unknown
- Exact mainnet activation date and epoch for SIMD-0326.
- Whether Agave 4.3 in October 2026 activates Solana Alpenglow, or ships more testing.
- How wallets, RPC providers, and indexers handle the breaking change.
- Whether Rotor has a published activation plan.

- Agave 4.3 client notes and feature-gate tracker.
- Whether the Q3 2026 line on the Alpenglow page updates.
- Separate BLS/VAT pages, which serve as prerequisites, not the consensus switch.
