The App Asked You to Wrap ETH. WETH Is Still Your Ether.

    Published September 29, 2026

DeFi apps wrap ETH into WETH so it can follow the ERC-20 token standard. Ethereum.org says minting is 1:1. Check the contract and keep ETH for gas.

The App Asked You to Wrap ETH. WETH Is Still Your Ether.

A DeFi app asks you to wrap ETH before a swap or a pool deposit. That prompt can look like you are sending ether away. Ethereum.org's Wrapped ether (WETH) page says wrapping deposits ETH into a smart contract and mints the same amount of WETH. Unwrapping burns WETH and returns the same amount of ETH.

This is general educational coverage of Ethereum.org, Uniswap, and MetaMask documentation. It is not a recommendation to wrap, unwrap, or use any app.

    Why Apps Ask for WETH

Ethereum.org says ETH is the main currency of Ethereum. It is used for staking, as a currency, and to pay gas. ETH predates the ERC-20 token standard, so it does not follow that token interface.

Ethereum.org's ERC-20 Token Standard page describes ERC-20 as a common interface for fungible tokens. Apps that use it can transfer tokens, check balances, and approve spending in the same way. Ethereum.org's DeFi page notes that much of DeFi uses ERC-20 and uses a wrapper for ETH called wrapped ether.

MetaMask's tokens user guide makes the same distinction. ETH is not ERC-20 compliant. WETH is an ERC-20 token that holds an equivalent value of the ETH for which it is swapped, with ERC-20 functionality.

    What Wrapping Does

Ethereum.org says wrapped ETH is a smart contract that lets you deposit any amount of ETH and receive the same amount in minted WETH. You can redeem WETH with that contract and receive the same amount of ETH. The redeemed WETH is burned.

You still need native ETH to pay gas. Ethereum.org says paying gas with WETH tokens is not natively supported. Wrapping and unwrapping require gas fees. Keep some ETH unwrapped if you expect to send later transactions.

Uniswap's page "What is the difference between removing liquidity as WETH and ETH?" says Ethereum is the network token for the Ethereum chain. To swap ETH as an ERC-20 token, it needs to be wrapped. Swaps on Uniswap can start and end with ETH. During the swap, all ETH is wrapped into WETH. Each network has its own wrapped version of its native token.

Not Every Token Labeled WETH Is the Same Contract

Ethereum.org lists a canonical WETH implementation on Ethereum Mainnet at 0xC02aaA39b223FE8D0A0e5C4F27eAD9083C756Cc2. The same page lists Arbitrum WETH at 0x82af49447d8a07e3bd95bd0d56f35241523fbab1 and Optimism WETH at 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000006.

Ethereum.org's FAQ says other WETH variants exist, including custom tokens created by app developers and versions issued on other blockchains. Those tokens may behave differently or have different security properties. Always check the token information to know which WETH implementation you are using.

MetaMask also describes wrapping as a way of bringing a token from one network to another, such as wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum Mainnet. That is a different use of the word wrap. Canonical WETH on Ethereum is ETH deposited into the WETH contract on that chain, not bitcoin moved across chains.

What Ethereum.org Says About Safety, and What Remains Unknown

Ethereum.org says WETH is generally considered secure because it is based on a simple, battle-tested smart contract, and that the WETH contract has been formally verified. That statement refers to the canonical implementation described on that page. It does not cover every token labeled WETH.

CryptoWorkPro has not audited the WETH contract. A wrap prompt on an unofficial site can send ETH to a different contract. Confirm the network and the contract address in the wallet before you sign. Do not enter a recovery phrase.

What to Check Before You Sign

Check the network. Check the token contract address against the list on Ethereum.org for that chain. Confirm that some native ETH will remain for gas. Confirm that the destination is the app you intended.

If the address does not match the canonical contract for that network, stop. A ticker of WETH is not enough on its own.
